Innovating agriculture - pioneering perennial cover crops

Innovating agriculture - pioneering perennial cover crops

By Andi Anderson

Iowa Learning Farms, in collaboration with the Iowa Nutrient Research Center and Conservation Learning Group, is excited to invite you to a virtual field day on March 21 at 1 p.m. Central time.

This event features insights from Iowa State University's leading experts, D. Raj Raman, Morrill Professor, and Daniel Andersen, associate professor, both specializing in agricultural and biosystems engineering.

The focus of this field day is RegenPGC, a forward-thinking project aimed at integrating perennial ground cover into Midwestern agricultural practices, thereby enhancing natural resources and public goods.

Initiated in September 2021 with the support of multiple funding sources including the USDA’s National Institute for Food and Agriculture, this five-year project emphasizes research, extension, education, and commercialization to establish perennial cover crops that coexist with annual crops like corn and soybean.

Kentucky bluegrass emerges as a promising candidate for perennial ground cover, thriving in harmony with corn by occupying different active phases. This innovative approach aims to minimize competition while maximizing the ecological benefits such as reducing erosion, nitrogen leaching, and improving resistance to weeds and pests.

To join the virtual field day and gain insight into this sustainable agricultural advancement, connect via the Zoom link or dial-in by phone at 309-205-3325 or 312-626-6799.

This session not only promises to be enlightening but also offers Certified Crop Adviser board-approved continuing education units for participants.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the cutting-edge developments in sustainable agriculture from the comfort of your home.
