Iowa Strengthens Foreign Ownership of Farmland Law

Iowa Strengthens Foreign Ownership of Farmland Law

By Andi Anderson

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig expressed his appreciation following the signing of Senate File 2204 by Governor Kim Reynolds, marking a significant step in fortifying Iowa's Foreign Ownership of Farmland law. The legislation aims to enhance enforcement, deterrence, and disclosure measures to uphold the prohibition on foreign ownership of farmland in Iowa.

In his statement, Secretary Naig emphasized the importance of preserving Iowa's precious and productive farmland within American hands, echoing the sentiments shared by many across the state. He underscored the collaborative effort involved in strengthening and modernizing this landmark law, highlighting the close working relationship with Governor Reynolds, Attorney General Bird, Secretary of State Pate, and key members of the House and Senate.

With the additional tools and requirements introduced through Senate File 2204, Iowa's prohibition on foreign ownership of farmland is poised to serve as a model for other states. Secretary Naig reaffirmed his commitment to protecting this valuable agricultural resource and ensuring its sustainability for future generations.

The signing of this legislation reflects Iowa's dedication to safeguarding its agricultural heritage and maintaining control over its farmland. Through proactive measures and collaborative partnerships, the state remains at the forefront of agricultural policy and regulation.
