Iowa City Schools Partner with Historic Farm for Ag Education

Iowa City Schools Partner with Historic Farm for Ag Education

By Andi Anderson

Iowa City Community School District embarks on an educational venture, teaming up with Grow: Johnson County to introduce sixth-grade students to the world of agriculture. This fall, students will immerse themselves in sustainable farming practices at the Historic Poor Farm.

Lisa Stark of Grow emphasizes the significance of educating young minds about food sources and farming's daily impact. For Patrick Snyder, the district's K-6 coordinator, this collaboration offers a gateway to diverse career paths and future success.

The farm visit aligns seamlessly with existing curriculum, providing insights into environmental and social sciences. Students will also explore culinary arts, cooking meals with farm-fresh produce.

Carmen Gwenigale underscores the interdisciplinary approach, offering students a holistic learning experience. Jason Grimm, Executive Director of Grow, highlights the farm's resources, including internships for high school and college students.

With less than 1% of the population engaged in agriculture, fostering interest in the field is crucial. This partnership not only enriches education but also cultivates a deeper understanding of agriculture's vital role in communities.
